Let`s Make A Wombat

The Story Behind Our Paper Mâché Wombat

Our paper mâché wombat started as a simple idea — take our Wombat Poo paper logo and bring it to life.

From there, it turned into something much bigger.

I teamed up with papier mâché artist Pam Thorne, but this isn’t just our project — it’s a community project. Every visitor who comes through the door has the chance to be part of it.

When you join our hands-on papermaking tour, you’ll learn how paper has been made since 105 AD and how we turn waste materials like cotton, hemp, and other fibres into quality handmade paper right here in Tasmania. Then you roll your sleeves up and make your own sheet.

That sheet doesn’t just go home with you — it becomes part of the wombat.

Each piece of paper is added to the sculpture, and you sign our contribution book, becoming part of something pretty special. And don’t worry — you won’t leave empty-handed. We’ll have some dry sheets of handmade paper ready for you to take home as well.

So far, we’ve had over 100 people from across Australia and around the world add their paper to the wombat — and it keeps growing.

Once he’s finished, he’ll take pride of place out the front of Creative Paper Tasmania, ready to greet everyone who passes by. Hopefully he’ll catch your eye and give you a reason to stop in, see what we’re all about, and maybe even be part of the next project.

The tour runs for around 30 minutes and is suited to all ages and abilities.

“Help build our life-sized paper mâché wombat — one sheet at a time.”
